The Ecological Coloured Plaster (kourasani) is a natural traditional top coat plaster better - known as “Roman mortar”. The modern material is based on historical plaster materials from ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine times and has excellent hydraulic and mechanical properties. The Pantheon in Rome is one of the oldest buildings that survives intact to this day. Roman mortar was the main construction material. Kourasani was also used in the building of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, in the monasteries of Mount Athos and in several other Byzantine buildings. It was also used in the Old City of Rhodes during the 18th century to shield and protect building roofs from rain and moisture.
Advantages of the Ecological Coloured Plaster (kourasani) “Gaias Texni”
The Ecological Coloured Plaster (kourasani) can be used as a coloured plaster. Thanks to its natural warm earthy tones, it needs no further painting, thus reducing the cost of construction and later maintenance costs.
However, the Ecological Coloured Plaster (kourasani) is much more that other coloured plasters in the market since it contains two very special added ingredients:
Prosseced Santorini earth (Terra Pozzuolana)
Ceramic / natural stone powder
Santorini earth is natural volcanic ash pumice that was named after the famous volcanic island of Santorini in the Aegean. However, it also appears in other volcanic areas like the islands of Milos and Nisiros. Santorini earth is a pozzolan, a material with excellent hydraulic properties. Thanks to this added ingredient, kourasani can repel moisture and withstand difficult weather conditions. The ceramic and stone powder gives kourasani its extra strength and durability as well as its natural earthy colours.
Thanks to its special ingredients, kourasani, can resist excess moisture and adverse conditions (frost, proximity to the sea etc). Walls plastered with kourasani need minimum maintenance and their colours do not fade or peel since they are contained in the body of the plaster.
Furthermore, to the material’s practical advantages should be added its distinctive look and aesthetic appeal. Kourasani looks hand–made and earthy, its surface is not flat but shows natural shading and varied hues.
Original kourasani comes in earthy colours. However, with the addition of natural pigments a variety can be achieved.
Kourasani is a completely environmentally – friendly product. All ingredients are natural and allow the building to “breathe”.
“Gaias Texni” has succeeded after many years of rigorous tests to develop this natural, traditional plaster product. The Ecological Coloured Plaster “Gaias Texni” is completely safe to use and live with and adsolutely environmentally friendly. Its excellent hydraulic and mechanical properties make it ideal for bioclimatic buildings.
